In
Exodus 1 a new King comes to rule in Egypt who knew nothing about Joseph’s
accomplishments. The Israelite's had multiplied greatly in Egypt that it posed a
great threat to this new King. He ordered the Israelite's to be oppressed with
hard labor. He put slave masters over them who forced them to build Pithom and Rameses
as storage cities for the King. But the harder they afflicted them the more
they multiplied. So the Egyptians demanded even more of them. They forced them
to work hard and make brick and mortar and to do all kinds of work in the field.
The King went further and asked the mid wives to kill the baby boys at birth. Seeing
that the Hebrew midwives did not consent to this, the King commanded his people
to throw all the Hebrew boys born into the Nile River.
The people
of Israel groaned because of the slavery. They called upon God to deliver them
from the hands of the Egyptians. God heard their groaning and remembered his
covenant with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. God planned for the birth of Moses and arranged
for Pharaoh’s daughter to take care of him as his own son. Later on Moses realized
his true identity and fled to Midian were after a long period of time he encountered
God in a burning bush while taking care of the flock of his Father in law.
The Lord
said to him, “I have seen the affliction of my people and I have heard their
cries when the Egyptian slave masters hurt them. I have come down to save them
from the Egyptians”. God sent Moses to deliver his people. He commissioned him
to go before the King to get them out and lead them to a good land, a fertile
land flowing with milk and honey.
When you
study this scripture, it shows that many years had passed by after Joseph Egypt’s
governor died and the reigning Pharaoh. We only see the descendants of Jacob
who had greatly multiplied in the land, just as the Lord had promised Jacob
that his descendants would be numerous. The Israelite's had lived in the land
for four hundred years. Time had much passed by that Joseph’s family was
long forgotten. The Israelite's had become slaves in the land, that years ago
had enjoyed living securely because of Joseph. Things had greatly changed for
them. And the Egyptians started oppressing them. They remembered the stories told
of their Father’s and how God favored them, and started crying out to God for
help. God heard their cry and saw the sufferings they went through and sent
them help.
God is
always concerned for his children. He hears them when they call on Him with a
sincere heart. He is concerned about their pain. He does not leave his children
to suffer on their own. All you need to do is exercise patience. Wait on God’s
deliverance. Keep on praying and believing and surely you shall see God’s hand; as the Israelite's did while in Egypt. He created us, so he knows us and will
always send us the help we need.
